We are a team of family and friends of Mai and Maryam Abumaree whose home was destroyed early in the genocide in Gaza. Tragically, Mai’s husband (Maryam’s father) was martyred in this bombing leaving Mai widowed, and 5 year old Maryam orphaned. Maryam’s father was the sole breadwinner in the family and so with his unbearable loss, not only have Maryam and Mai lost the love of their lives, they have also become deprived of any source of income and means of survival.

Mai, Maryam and half of their immediate family have been evacuated to Egypt where they are struggling to survive. We are thus collecting donations to provide Mai with a Relief Fund to be able to care for her daughter’s needs for the foreseeable future. Please support this precious family by donating generously and sharing this campaign with your loved ones. It is our collective duty to care for orphans, and we are relying on you. We are also seeking a Kafil el Yatim for Maryam (see below for details).

What happened to them, in Mai’s words: “My husband, my daughter Maryam, and I lived as a small family in Northern Gaza. Our life was simple and happy. After October 7, the situation changed from war. After that, I lost my husband and my beautiful home, and my situation changed for Maryam and I. Then I was displaced with my daughter Maryam to my family’s home in Rafah.

I lived for 6 months with my family in Rafah, and Maryam and I suffered greatly from the ravages of war. Maryam’s condition changed after the loss of her father and the loss of security and safety as a result of the war.

Maryam was in kindergarten and lost her kindergarten and many of her friends. The occupation destroyed her kindergarten and her dreams. Maryam was a little girl who loved her toys, loved her kindergarten, loved her father very much, and was very attached to him, but Maryam was deprived of her father’s affection and was deprived of her home, her toys, and everything.”

It is important to mention that both Mai’s mother and father suffer from chronic illnesses, and her brothers are unable to provide for them due to personal injury and unemployment, under-employment, or because they are in Gaza. They have no other family support as the rest of their extended family are in Gaza.

What are the funds for? All funds collected will be set aside and used for Maryam’s immediate and ongoing daily needs from food, clothing, hygiene, toys, education, medical necessities, travel etc.

How are the funds going to be collected and managed? Ariba Bukhari will be collecting the funds in her Canadian bank account for the beneficiaries and will be sending the aid to Mai in Egypt as needed.

We are also seeking a Kafil el Yatim (كافل اليتيم) – A responsible ongoing provider/sponsor In Islam, the community has a collective responsibility and moral obligation to care for orphans. And if an individual is able to provide ongoing financial support to an orphan, this is considered a very honourable deed and one of the greatest and most important good works a person can do in this life. Because of an orphan’s absolute vulnerability, their care is strongly urged, praised, and rewarded in Islam. Beyond this gofundme campaign, we are also seeking a Kafil el Yatim for Maryam. If you feel called to fill this role, please contact the organizers.

Who are we? Mai is Maryam’s mother. Nada Ashkar is a Lebanese-Canadian friend of Mai and her family and a counsellor and acupuncturist who has provided some trauma care and humanitarian relief for the family in Egypt. Ariba Bukhari, a dear friend of Nada, is a Pakistani-Canadian who works in IT, is a Humanitarian and is a supporter of the family.
